Asking The Wrong Question

I’ve been watching John Brennan, outgoing CIA head and known liar who used the CIA to spy on Senators (see Appendix). He’s been getting interviewed about recent political events. Unfortunately, they didn’t ask him the right question.

Here’s the story so far. Trump met recently with the very top three intelligence officials, who are the DNI (Director of National Intelligence) and the heads of the CIA and FBI. After the meeting, CNN reported that the intelligence chiefs had given him an unverified salacious piece of disinformation. It was a bogus document that had been originally commissioned by Trump’s Republican opponents some months ago during the primary elections, and then passed on to his Democratic opponents after he got the nomination.

A number of news organizations had access to this piece of disinformation over the period of the campaign. As you might imagine, they all did their very best to try to confirm it. It would have been a bombshell … but in the event, not one of them was able to get even one single “second-source” for the document, someone who could independently verify the claims made in the bogus “dossier”. Not one. There was and is nothing to back it up. So as responsible news organizations, they didn’t print it.

In addition, the “IC”, which I’ve learned is the acronym for the “Intelligence Community”, was also unable to find a single second-source for this garbage.

(As an aside, this makes it very strange to me that this nonsense would be part of a highest-level briefing. There are hundreds of pieces of disinformation like this floating around at any instant. The proper thing to do would be to pass them to the incoming White House legal counsel or someone like that. But I digress, back to the story …)

In response to the CNN piece, a low-life so-called “news” site called “BuzzFeed” printed the actual document complete with all of the scandalous scurrilous sensational lies. Since then it has been totally discredited, as has BuzzFeed.

In response Trump tweeted:trump-tweets-intelligence-agencies

(Let me set aside his foolish use of the word “Nazi”, always a mistake on the intarwebs, again that is a digression.)

When asked about this accusation against the intelligence agencies today, John Brennan gave the same answer other intelligence officials have given. They said no, you couldn’t pin the leak of the bogus “dossier” on the intelligence community, because that piece of garbage had been in the public for some months. And you’d have to say yes, that’s true. Anyone could have leaked it into the public domain.

So … why is this asking the wrong question?

Well, think about the whole chain of events. Which one step in the entire thing is unexplained?

The answer to that question, or rather the question in question, is this question:

How did CNN find out that this POS bogus “Russian dossier” was part of the intelligence briefing?

I say that there is only one place for that information to come from, and that is the IC, the intelligence community. They would be the only ones to know the content of such an incredibly high-level briefing.

I also note where it was leaked, which was to CNN, or as it is known these days, the “Clinton News Network”. cnn-emailsIt got that name when the DNC emails revealed that CNN had dishonestly and secretly passed future debate questions to Hilary Clinton so she could appear to be quicker on her feet than the Trumpster.

So I would say that at the root of this is the leak from the intelligence community to CNN. Remember that the Donald’s motto seems to be, punch back twice as hard. And given that I am widely known on the web for the same failing, punching back twice as hard, I can only say one thing:

Intelligence agencies should never have allowed this fake news to “leak” into the public.

Here, we’re in between storms. The fog rolled in from the ocean this morning, and stopped just before reaching our house on the hillside six miles (ten km) from the coast. Now at noon it is starting to ebb back out, like the moist breath of the ocean itself … I’m going out into the sunshine.

Best of life to everyone,

CIA Boss Lies About His Earlier Lie, Proved Wrong By Earlier CIA Statements

from the lies-catch-up-to-you dept

Last week, we wrote about how CIA boss John Brennan was trying to do a bit of history rewriting concerning the CIA’s spying on Senate staffers’ computers. As you may recall, when the allegations first came out, Brennan insisted:

“Let me assure you the CIA was in no way spying on [the Senate Intelligence Committee] or the Senate.”

Except, back in July, the CIA’s Inspector General put out a report that not only confirmed the story, but showed that the spying was even worse than initially detailed. At the time, Brennan apparently apologized to Feinstein, but things have heated up recently, after Brennan further refused to reveal to the Senate who authorized the spying.

Now Brennan is continuing to try to spin the story, angrily hitting back at the reports out there. First up, he tries to spin that quote above by claiming the context was different:

“This is part of the mischaracterizations. The Council on Foreign Relations, [moderator] Andrea Mitchell, said, did in fact CIA officers hack into the Senate computers to thwart the investigation on potential interrogation? Thwart the investigation, hacking in – no, we did not, and I said that’s beyond the scope of reason.”

But, no, what he actually said is that “the CIA was in no way spying on [the Senate Intelligence Committee] or the Senate.” It wasn’t about thwarting an investigation. He made a definitive statement about the spying. And that was a lie.

  1. A very large amount of what the intelligence services are trying to do, on both sides of the Atlantic, can be best understood when you realise that the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, and by 1995 there was no obvious work for them to do. A condition they had not been in since before WW1.

How lucky they were when a novel terrorist attack succeeded spectacularly in 2001! How influential they were in making sure that the attack did not ‘go to waste’, but spurred at least two major pointless wars, thus creating many more potential terrorists! And how unhappy they would be if more peaceful relations developed between China, Russia and the West….

Not so foolish when know Trump outside of the propaganda media – he is very strategic in his word choices and it would foolish to scoff and brush aside such an important use of the word Nazi and Germany
Better to know & understand Why he used it.
    1. Nazi means “National Socialist party of Germany”
    2. His specific use of words is what drives the news story for the next week
    3. by driving that news he is using “rules for radicals” “Pick the Target – Freeze it – Personalize it – Polorize it ” against the liberals aka socialists aka nazi’s

    • My reading of the general response to that word suggests that he did NOT use it deliberately. As many commenters have pointed out, the Nazis killed six or eight MILLION helpless prisoners. Comparing anyone to them is generally a bit of an overreach unless they too have killed, well, say a million people for an ante just to get into the game …

      • Before the NAZIs started killing people en-mass, they selected and isolated specific targets: gays, the disabled, political figures that objected to the activities, Jews. Each target was systematically persecuted, often imprisoned without trial, often driven into the grave.

By isolating and targeting Trump, the intelligence community are behaving very much like the NAZIs did in their early days.

        • No, the ‘IC’ is behaving nothing like the NSDAP in its ‘early days’. The party , far from ‘targeting gay’s’ used as its armed wing the SA (Sturmabteilung – storm troopers) led by the homosexual Georg Rohm. When Rohm and other leaders were shot on the ‘night of the long knives’, they were in bed with each other. Hitler had nothing against homosexuals personally, and indeed detested the Catholic Church.

Himmler had a bee in his bonnet about the threat homosexuals represented to the ‘volksgemeinschaft’ (‘Peoples’ Community’); nonetheless, his own SS was rife with much unpunished homosexuality, often excused in the pages of ‘Der Schwarze Korps’, the SS house journal.

Cartoon Third Reichs represent the greatest threat to understanding the Party and its revolutionary (not conservative) destruction; and Trump’s outburst is no exception

      • The referent should be a state that spies on its citizens, so Nazi was a poor word choice.
KGB or Stasi and their states would have worked, and after what Snowdon revealed, the answer could have been yes. Or if he meant a state that slanders some of their citizens, then Nazi would certainly work. After all, it was fake spying. What a strange world.

My problem with the Godwin requirement not to mention Hitler, or the Nazis, is that I do not see them as unusually bad. This does NOT mean that I support their activities, or feel that they did not do bad things. It’s just that I believe that ALL human societies, in the right circumstances, can act the same way as the Germans did in the 1940s, or the Turks in the 1910s, or the Russians in the 1920s, or the Indonesians in the 1960s, or the Tutsis in the 1990s. During the Congo Civil War, the Pygmys were hunted down and eaten…

Do not think that the Germans in WW2 were a special case. Given the right circumstances, the Americans, Brits, Australians, Greeks – ALL of our societies are capable of mass murder and unspeakable cruelty….

        • Yes, but Godwin’s Law is quite clever. He could have called it Godwin’s Black Hole. It’s a debate killer. For many reasons. The Nazis did many bad things, maybe even all the bad things. History is full of mankind’s evil, as far back as history records it, tons of it.

Let us say that the evil things the Nazis did were A,B,C,D, etc. For the sake of argument, B is for book burning, E is for ethnic cleansing, T is for torture, and so on.

If someone says Joe is like a Nazi because he censors or bans books (B), that is bad because we know Nazis are bad. That someone may or may not be counting on you to think that Joe also does A,C,D, E, etc. It’s a cheap shot.

Scott Adams’ explanation of the Trump defence makes sense to me.

I think Trump was trying to highlight the attitudes and methodology as expressed in these quotes from the Nazi era (a rule book eagerly taken to the hearts of the Establishments and MSM both in the US and the UK in my opinion):

“In relation to the political decontamination of our public life, the government will embark upon a systematic campaign to restore the nation’s moral and material health. The whole educational system, theater, film, literature, the press and broadcasting – all these will be used as a means to this end.”
    Adolf Hitler

“All propaganda has to be popular and has to accommodate itself to the comprehension of the least intelligent of those whom it seeks to reach.”
    Adolf Hitler

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
    Joseph Goebbels

“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly – it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.”
    Joseph Goebbels

“Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way round, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise.”
    Adolf Hitler

“Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.”
    Joseph Goebbels
