The Professionally Outraged

Well, white folks like Ezra Klein and other people in the professionally outraged class are once again outraged. You are shocked, I’m sure. Here’s the latest thought-crime that the Donald has committed, during his one hour plus press conference. A black woman reporter named April Ryan from the American Urban Radio Networks asked the following:

RYAN: When you say the inner cities, are you going to include the CBC, Mr. President, in your conversations with your urban agenda, your inner-city agenda?

TRUMP: Am I going to include who?

RYAN: Are you going to include the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus?

TRUMP: Well, I would. I tell you what: Do you want to set up the meeting? Do you want to set up the meeting?

RYAN: No, no, no. I’m just a reporter.

TRUMP: Are they friends of yours? Set up the meeting.

RYAN: I know some of them, but I’m sure they’re watching right now —

TRUMP: Let’s go. Set up a meeting. I would love to meet with the Black Caucus. I think it’s great, the Congressional Black Caucus. I think it’s great.

Now, from my perspective, Trump has just offered this woman the opportunity of a lifetime. He has said that she can set up the meeting. Not only that, but she already knows some of the members of the CBC.

cbc-iOh my goodness, dear lady, run don’t walk! PICK UP THE PHONE AND SET UP A MEETING! Go talk with whoever you know in the CBC, you’ve just been deputized in public by the President to set up the meeting! And who do you think will get the best angle for the story, maybe even an exclusive on the meeting? Who will get the chance for one-on-one interviews with some of the players? Who will get the chance to call up the White House and discuss the proposed meeting?

Why, that would be Ms. April Ryan from the American Urban Radio Networks … seriously, people kill for a chance like this reporter had.

So … what has been the response to this curious offer from the President? Sadly, April Ryan did not see what was before her … she explained on Twitter:

I am a journalist not a convener! But thank you for answering my questions.

Opportunity of a lifetime in her grasp, handed to her on a silver platter by the President, and she is blinded by her political views … it is a Greek tragedy. The chance was hers and she did not take it. Reporters around the planet are doing a facepalm imagining what they would have done …

And of course, proving that no good deed goes unpunished, the professionally offended class chimed in from all corners of the globe, excoriating Trump for … for … well, something. Susan Rice and Ezra Klein recommended this point of view from Vox

The moment is just one example of a critique Trump has faced repeatedly: He genuinely seems to view black people as a monolithic “other” — a group of people who work and behave in exactly similar ways. Not only does this seem to define an entire group of people down to a lowest common denominator, but it’s also simply dehumanizing to treat individuals as only part of a bigger group.

Ummm … errr … say what? Trump’s answer shows he views black people as a “monolithic other”? This is just elitist hyperbole and bafflegab.

Then there was this lovely comment, in all caps:

IGNORING THE FACT THAT TRUMP IS THE PRESIDENT AND CAN SET UP HIS OWN MEETING, HIS COMMENT SUGGESTS THAT APRIL RYAN IS FRIENDS WITH THE CBC BECAUSE ALL BLACK PEOPLE KNOW EACH OTHER

And Representative Elijah Cummings said the same:

“I think a lot of people assume that all black people know all black people”

Ummm … errr … guys, April Ryan said she knows several members of the CBC, so if Trump assumed she knew the CBC folks … he was right. They do know each other.

Not only that, but have you ever in your life met someone who thought that all black people know each other? I know I have not.

Then we have the writer from Salon who tweeted:

just watched the clip of Trump barking at April Ryan like she’s his secretary to set up a meeting w/the Congressional Black Caucus

Read it yourself. He ASKED her a couple of times if she WANTED to set up a meeting, and he URGED her to take the opportunity … that’s not barking at a secretary. That’s trying, albeit unsuccessfully, to give a reporter a change to be more than a reporter, to be a participant in moving the CBC agenda forwards.

Anyhow, if you look around the web, this meaningless quack from the talking heads goes on and on about Trump and April Ryan, with psychological claims made about the contents of Trumps cranium, all kinds of accusations, claims that the President hates or doesn’t understand or doesn’t care about black people …

… and not one person seems to have noticed that what the President actually did was to offer someone the chance of a lifetime, and she turned her nose up at it.

It’s funny. Trump once said that he could pull out a pistol on Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and his supporters would STILL vote for him. And that was probably true … but foolish me, I never thought about the other side of that equation.

The other side of that equation is that if Trump raised a man from the dead on Fifth Avenue, his opponents would still NOT vote for him … and this is a perfect example.

Regards to all,

w.

  1. Trump said that at least one of the people was not returning his calls.

Everyone is ignoring the implications that noting can or should be done to help the inner cities (no matter what race lives there), unless the Congressional Black Caucus is involved and approves the proposals. Since the CBC is overwhelmingly Democrat (and imposes race restrictions on memberships, no matter what the makeup of the people being represented), if they were able to fix the inner cities, they have had many years where they have had control of the city governments, (in many cases state government), congress, and the white house. This shows that they don’t know what to do to fix the problems.

    • The Congressional Black Caucus is responsible for the morass and poverty that America’s inner cities have become. They will never fix it, they are too busy personally profiting from it.

    • In addition, more than a dozen members of the CBC skipped the inauguration, standing by John Lewis’ statement that Trump wasn’t a “legitimate president”. He likely tossed it back to the reporter because he saw the futility in trying to set up the meeting.

      • Which I think is the real intent of the question. I would imagine that Trump has already tried to include them and they are not interested (or at least have a few demands they would like met)… this reporter was not there to ask a real question, but to poke a lever under the President to give into the demands. I bet she knew the answer to her question already, and was hoping to have some sort of answer in the negative so she could be outraged for the CBC to add to their bargaining power. Didn’t work out how she wanted… obviously hasn’t read Trump’s book yet.

  2. <i….The moment is just one example of a critique Trump has faced repeatedly: He genuinely seems to view black people as a monolithic “other” — a group of people who work and behave in exactly similar ways. …

I would have thought that having a ‘Congressional Black Caucus’ was a better example of someone considering that one segment of society had similar group special needs on account of their race.

But really, Mr Eschenbach, why are you dignifying this kind of drivel with a considered response? The original piece from Vox was never intended to be a substantive argument against President Trump’s position. It was intended to maintain a negative view of Trump to enable his opponents to feel more comfortable. Cogent argument, or truth, does not enter into the equation.

We are living in a world where the credibility of commentators has been lost. People do not expect to hear a balanced viewpoint from any analyst any longer – the ‘experts’ simply mouth their positions while the people, by and large, ignore them – as we saw in spades during the Brexit vote. Who would have thought that a Western society would ignore pleas from their Prime Minister, their entire establishment, the heads of the Bank of England, the IMF, the Fed and the European Bank, The Presidents of the European Union and the United States, pretty much all the media and the Pope? But they did.

A few days ago, my attention was drawn to one of these ‘Truth Checking’ sites which have become so prevalent. The item being checked was a story that a US republican politician commented that those responsible for the Oroville dam had been warned about the possible damage, and should therefore have made funds available to address the issue. The checking site admitted that it was the case that environmental groups had warned that erosion of the emergency spillway was a possibility, but that official reports indicated no cause for alarm. So the story was duly described as ‘Mostly False’.

I have rarely seen such a blatant attempt to reverse reality. There was no point in raising a complaint, because the site was obviously not interested in truth – just propaganda. I am afraid that we will see many more such examples before the World recovers from its collective madness…

Used to watch quit a bit a CNN and MSNBC talking heads back when they were saner…now they all need rabies shots (or strait jackets). Since they didn’t used to be this way, I have to believe that they are being told by CEO’s to cooperate or lose their very high pay. The only result from my end is that now I only watch Fox except for the occasional tune over to enjoy a good laugh from their hysterics.

Just WTF do such people thing they are? Despite the fact she’s up to her neck in Racial stuff and is obviously one of the multi permanently wounded, Trump needs to bow down, learn and follow it appears? When that lot learn that he won’t change to their protocol (?) he’ll likely have a far better press to face…not holding breath for a while.

The quip about the BBC being fair and free the other day…we pay for it in UK and it sure is nowhere near fair! Lefty, airhead and largely feminista in most high places.

  4. I saw that exchange and had the same thought,”Whip out your cellphone, Honey, and start calling people!”. Not surprised in the least that the Racebaiting Poverty Pimps are doing their usual minstrel show song&dance.

And on a totally related note, the Congressional Black Caucus is just as racist as the KKK and Muslim Brotherhood.

    • in 2006 a Jew ran for congress in a 60% black district with the promise that he would apply to join the CBC if he was elected to best represent his district.

the charter of the CBC says nothing about race requirements, but the application was rejected and he was ridiculed for daring to apply.

      • I remember Mr Limbow speaking of that around the time Hillary lost the nomination to Obama. Believe it was also touched on in an article about Ben Carson at The Evil Brietbart in late 2015. Have never received an answer from Congressional Ethics Committee as to why there is no Congressional White Caucus.

        • The CBC claims that there has been an implicit Congressional White Caucus for over 200 years, this is just them getting their own back.

          • Oh, I know what the Racebaiting Poverty Pimps say, I want an answer from the controlling body for ethics in Congress. RPPs keep screeching they want a “conversation” about race in America. Fine, first step is Congressional Ethics Committee explaining to the people of America why they sanction a racist body within Congress. Not holding my breath, racist scum always hide and lie, its all they have.

  6. Making America Great Again is going to have to include fixing the inner cities. Take the murder rate for example. In this list of the 50 most dangerous cities in the world (excluding war zones), the US has four on the list: St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans. I was surprised Chicago wasn’t on the list; it’s only running about 19 murders per 100,000 per year. The rate for the US on the whole is about 5. Having any US cities on that list is an outrage.

  7. The reporter was not asking a serious question; she was setting out bait in hopes of getting an anti-Trump zinger. A serious (and perfectly reasonable) question would be something like: “Mr. President can you please give us some more details on your urban agenda, specifically what your plans are, who your are involving to help make them and when you expect to present something to Congress?”. This is a question designed to elicit information which is likely of great interest to Americans in general, and urban populations in particular.

But her question was really an accusation that Trump’s promise to improve inner cities couldn’t possibly be sincere unless the CBC was involved.

    Name one.

You will probably find a lot more people who assume that many black people don’t even know all their potential dads, and all their own kids.
But of course, that’s not just black people. 😉

  9. Trump is so far ahead of the media and they can’t understand it.

It reminds me of cars racing around an oval track. One extremely fast car has lapped the others several times. As the fast car is coming up to lap them again, the others believe they are ahead because they see the fast car behind them!

    It’s fun to watch.

  10. Hi Willis,
Occasional lurker. Totally agree. When I saw that my reaction was: ask for a follow up: whom do I call to arrange the meeting? Just goes to show that these intellectuals are somewhat deprived in the quick thinking through department.

    • Thanks for the reply, Joe. I agree, and she didn’t even need a follow-up question unless it was

“Thank you, Mr. President. Once I’ve been in touch with the CBC, who should I liaise with at the White House?

Gold, pure gold, and she let it slip through her fingers … heck, if she were smart she could STILL put the meeting together. Needs to move fast, but what an opportunity!

  11. Trump’s response to this reporter/activist was a classic management technique. When a subordinate, other manager, etc (but not the boss) suggests that something should be done, you respond that that is a great idea. Why don’t you:
    – write up a business case
    – prepare a report
    – do it

It’s astonishing how many times something that’s so important the fate of the company depends on it, just completely vanishes from the discussion when it is turned back on the suggester.

It’s a shame the reporter was too ignorant to recognise a standard tactic of management.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thanks, Hivemind. You are totally correct that it is a common management technique. However, I would describe it slightly differently.

I would not describe it as a way to turn something back on the suggester so that they drop it.

Instead, in my head it is a way to offer the suggester a place on the team. Now, it might end up merely turning the suggester off as you say … but on the other hand, people love to implement their own ideas.

      • In well run companies, this is also a way to get things done, because it spreads the work of moving the company forward over more people – so more can be accomplished. Good leaders empower people to take the ball and run with it. It is also a way to find out who the doers in the organization are who can help propel the company forward. Trump empowered her to make something happen. But many in the media and the political class aren’t doers, they just like to chatter on.
