The Magical Art Of Misdirection

As usual, watching the Tweeter-In-Chief is quite hilarious. His latest blast from last night has well and truly set the media’s hair on fire.

trump-tap-01trump-tap-02trump-tap-03trump-tap-04trump-tap-05trump-tap-06

Now, you have to understand something about the President’s tweets, famously expressed by Salena Zito: The media took Trump literally but not seriously, and his supporters took him seriously but not literally. In this case, when he says “Obama” he means “the Obama Administration”, he’s used that shorthand lots of times.

This lack of understanding of Trump TweetSpeak led Comrade Obama to issue an appropriately lawyerly denial, since he is a lawyer. Well, actually, he had his spokesdude issue a denial, he’s far too busy with really really important stuff to actually talk to people himself. Apparently Comrade Obama believes that all people are equal, but some are more equal than others. In any case, from the NY Post:

A spokesman for former President Barack Obama today denied that Obama ordered wiretaps at Trump Tower.

“A cardinal rule of the Obama administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice,” an Obama spokesman said.

“As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen,” the statement said.

As with everything a lawyer says, you have to look at what he did NOT say. He did NOT say, for example,

“My Administration did NOT wiretap Trump Tower”.

That alone tells me that they possibly did wiretap Trump Tower. And as discussed below, un-named “sources” say that indeed a FISA warrant was applied for, turned down, re-applied for, and eventually granted to wiretap a server in Trump Tower.

Nor did His Imperial Ex-President’s Royal Spokesmodel say, for example;

As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever suggested or implied surveillance on any U.S. citizen

With Obama’s disclaimer having enough holes to drive a semi truck through, and Obama saying he never ever directly ordered it, this quote from King Hank the Second comes to mind …

Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?

We also have to remember the context for this pure-as-the-driven-snow disclaimer from Comrade Obama.

Bear in mind that this is the same Obama Administration that used the intelligence agencies to secretly spy on Associated Press reporters, bugging their phones and hacking their computers.

And this is the same Obama Administration that used the IRS to attack the Tea Party.

There’s more. This is the same Obama Administration whose CIA Director had to apologize to Congress for spying on our own elected officials!

Also, remember that the FBI wanted to investigate the Clinton Foundation … but they were shut down by the Obama Justice Department …

And this is the same Obama Administration that recorded Mike Flynn of the Trump transition team instead of withdrawing from the wiretap as required when an American citizen was on the line. (In the event, the wiretap disclosed absolutely nothing untoward, but he should not have been wiretapped.)

Next, the usual “un-named sources” said back in November said that there was a FISA warrant application to wiretap Trump’s campaign:

Two separate sources with links to the counter-intelligence community have confirmed to Heat Street that the FBI sought, and was granted, a FISA court warrant in October, giving counter-intelligence permission to examine the activities of ‘U.S. persons’ in Donald Trump’s campaign with ties to Russia.

Contrary to earlier reporting in the New York Times, which cited FBI sources as saying that the agency did not believe that the private server in Donald Trump’s Trump Tower which was connected to a Russian bank had any nefarious purpose, the FBI’s counter-intelligence arm, sources say, re-drew an earlier FISA court request around possible financial and banking offenses related to the server. The first request, which, sources say, named Trump, was denied back in June, but the second was drawn more narrowly and was granted in October after evidence was presented of a server, possibly related to the Trump campaign, and its alleged links to two banks; SVB Bank and Russia’s Alfa Bank. While the Times story speaks of metadata, sources suggest that a FISA warrant was granted to look at the full content of emails and other related documents that may concern US persons.

And this all seems to have been precipitated by a recent Mark Levine investigation reported here.

Given all of that, it is certainly reasonable to think that the Obama Administration could have used the intelligence apparatus to spy on Donald Trump and his campaign. After all that skullduggery, it’s no stretch at all to think they spied on Trump.

Now, to date is there any actual evidence to back up the President’s tweet? ABSOLUTELY NONE. And that is driving the media over the edge. And therein lies the beauty of his tweet.

For months, the Democratic-media complex has been hounding first Candidate Trump and now President Trump over claimed connections to Russia. To date, despite extensive investigation by the FBI, the CIA, and every media organization in DC, there has been NOT ONE SCRAP OF EVIDENCE OF ACTUAL WRONGDOING WITH RUSSIA BY THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN. Nothing. Zip. Zero. The media and the Democrats have been making accusations of treason over and over while operating in a completely evidence-free zone.

Now President Trump has done the same, accused without evidence. And just listen to people in the Democratic-media complex screaming, it’s non-stop. Carrying the story forwards we find this:

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Sunday in a statement that reports “concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling.”

“President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016,” Spicer said.

So why did I find all of this hilarious?

Here’s the key to understanding the Tweeter-In-Chief. It’s bozo simple.

Pay absolutely no attention to his words.

Seriously! His words are MEANINGLESS. People still don’t get it. Once you get stuck in his words you’ll be lost forever.

Let me see if I can explain it as an allegory. Here’s the best I can come up with.

Trump uses Twitter like a stick with words written on it. Think about a man using that stick to poke a bear. The stick keeps the man away from the bear, but he can still poke the bear with his stick. So he pokes and prods and pushes the bear with the stick.

Now, what is happening is that the media is reporting the story of the man poking the bear with the stick, as they should. But in response to what they see, they are running around screaming “LOOK AT THE WORDS WRITTEN ON THE STICK! DISSECT AND DISCUSS EACH WORD! IS THIS WORD RIGHT? IS THERE EVIDENCE FOR THAT WORD?”

Me, I ignore his words. Instead, I look at what is important … the key question has nothing to do with what is written on the stick.

The key question to ask, the only thing worth looking at, is what does the bear do when it is poked?

That’s what you need to consider. Not what the President said. Look away from that entirely, stand back, look around, and consider instead what the various people who are the targets of his tweet did.

And in this case, in addition to spontaneous tonsorial combustion in the media, here’s what his Tweet has already occasioned. From here we have:

Although many Republicans were caught unawares by President Trump’s unproven claim that the Obama White House ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower, Rep. Devin Nunes has promised to look into it.

Nunes (R-Tulare), who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, said the probe of the president’s allegation would be wrapped into an existing investigation of Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential campaign.

… and from here

Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton expressed Sunday that President Trump’s accusation that the Obama administration wiretapped Trump’s presidential campaign is certain to be included in the Senate Intelligence committee’s ongoing probe into Russia’s possible efforts to “undermine the U.S. political system.”

So now, we no longer have both the Senate and the House Intelligence Committees investigating evidence-free accusations of collusion with the Russians.

Instead, both of those Committees are now investigating the actions of both the Obama and the Trump Administrations! How good is that? They can chase their tails round and round forever.

And for verification of this interpretation of events?

A few minutes ago, the White House through Sean Spicer just announced that they would make absolutely no further announcements on this matter until the House and Senate investigations are completed ….

Game, set, and match. Nothing left to see here, folks, although the media will grind on it for days. He’s already won and moved on.

  1. It appears that many Democrats have spoken to a Russian making it less problematic that Trump, or one of his supporters, may also have.

Focusing now on possible Obama Administration improper actions and overreaches makes a lot more sense.

  2. The recusal by AG Sessions of the Russia investigation though does leave Trump vulnerable, at least until the Senate can confirm a couple of deputy AG’s to watch over things at DOJ. Obama hold-overs and the so-called “Deep State” careerists could do nefarious sabotage to Trump until a few new Deputiy AGs arrive to watch over the FBI and Prosecutors working the issues.

  4. WRT to the Trump allegations, the comments by Mark Levine, as well as the documents from which he read on Fox News Sunday, give all the cover necessary for Trump’s tweets. If it is reported in NYT, The Guardian, etc. it is public information.

  5. Trump tweeted very specific words – wire tap, Obama, phones, Trump Tower. The media concentrated on those items. The Spicer tweets were more general – is requesting, as part of, exercise their oversight, Executive branch, investigative powers were abused. Specific to general terms. Yet, the media continues to look at the specific terms.

The frenzy around Session has helped the Russian issue since it showed that everyone talks to Ambassadors of many nations since it is part of their job. If the Ds can’t remember that they met with ambassadors and are then shown tweets and pictures where they are in meetings then how can you blame Sessions? He recuses himself, so again, how can you blame him or Trump.

Add in the Obama surveillance of the media (Rosen and his parents as well as the AP) and Congress (back in 2015 connected with the Iran deal) and everybody might be angry at the Obama Administration.

Here is an interesting quote – “According to the Journal article, to avoid a paper trail that would show that they wanted the NSA to report on Netanyahu’s interactions with Congress, Obama officials decided to let the agency decide how much of this intelligence to provide and what to withhold. The article cited an unnamed U.S. official who explained, “We didn’t say, ‘Do it.’ We didn’t say, ‘Don’t do it.’”

And the MSM, Dems and even Repubs are off nattering over a tweet which reduces the amount of airtime and print spent on the the whole McCarthyite smearing of Trump and his aides over possible meetings with Russians.

One thing about the Obama denial is that he doesn’t need to say anything specific to get his underlings to do his dirty work. I’ve watched this time and again in both business and government with personal experience. If the bureaucrat is any good they can make their desires known with body language and circumlocution and it will be passed down the line so there is nothing traceable back to the real instigator. It doesn’t even require something as specific as “will no one rid me of this troublesome priest!”

Other things that frustrate me is that Sessions hasn’t gotten rid of all the Obama lawyers like Obama did (since they’re dangerous), and he hasn’t drawn up indictments for Hillary, Lynch, Clapper, Lerner, et al.

  10. As you often do esteemed sir… you are overthinking. The middle class, historical source of moderates both political and mental, has gone missing.

A small upper echelon of what had been the middle class has been thrust rudely into affluence, they now possess money that derives from bubbles and lottery winnings (not actual lotteries, the winnings that result as the ultra-wealthy are leveraging money around) and haven’t a clue why. These folk (and their children) tow the status quo because deep down they know they’re standing on air in a timeless Wily E Coyote moment.

The mass of old middle class however has been pried downward towards poor. You may see the same income but it is now encircled by wolves. We have embraced the illusory idea of needing to insure everything under the guise of planning for the worst… and in the process, have just been fleeced by middlemen who as it turns out, are subsidized from above so they can pocket what comes from below. Stealth-flation and expenses have taken out the middle. And the Fed is collecting Global Warming and other taxes today from everywhere at once. You are subsidizing countless global things you didn’t sign on to and many you don’t even know about.

The country-folk who elected Trump are angry with ‘the system’. Those who didn’t are just angry because angry has become trendy. Jests are being taken literal and the literal in jest, through a combination of imbecility and calculated sociopathy.

The middle ground is lost. Each half of the country thinks the other half is stark raving mad… and half of them are right. We now rejoin your daily anxiety already in progress.

    • When a business man is sued, what is his first reaction?
Let me tell you the answer.
      It is to counter-sue.
If he does not do so, the best outcome for him is to waste money and resources on defense \, be dragged through the mud by hostile reporters, and win years later and be back where he started. The outcomes for those who sue him are either to win big or throw mud in his face until he is vindicated years later.
If he counter-sues, both sides are in parallel, but opposite positions. Each one will be subject to indignities, each can lose big, and each has a stake in ending the entire proceedings.
President Trump has counter-sued the Democrats and the Press.
No Reporter or Democrat now knows what ammunition he has for what he been tweeting. Nobody knows who will come out of this whole.
The Democrats suffered their first defeat in this saga when President Obama and his spokesperson announced that nobody in the White House ordered a wiretap. That statement leaves open whether underlings in the justice department carried one out without his direct order. This statement, by the way is like the statement “I did not fly to Mars.” Only a FISA court can order a FISA investignation so nobody in the White House could do so. This is interpreting this denial legalistically, but that is exactly how political statements must be interpreted.
Now a key question is whether a request for such an investigation was ever made. The New York Times a long time ago seemed to report that such a request was made.
This in itself would mean that someone in the Obama administration sought to investigate the Trump candidacy, through investigating using goverment resources some of his advisors. This in itself is worse than anything Trump has been accused of.
Many people now urge Trump to reveal his sources and what he knows. That would be extremely foolish on his part. The sloppiness of the Press interpretations of what is going on mean that they are going to make claims that he knows to be false. That is the time to hit them with contradictory and verifiable information. To dispel the fog confronting the press now would be like telling an enemy in war when and where your next operation will be.
If there was any FISA request at all denials of same are false and scandalous. Denying it is like defending a position that can easily be outflanked, unless the reporter knows there was no such request. But who can know that? Meanwhile. a Democrat reporter has said that her sources say that there were discussions in the White House of an investigation of Trump supporters for ties with Russia.
The Democrats are quick at making accusations, but completely unused to answering them. In the past Republican politicians considered it beneath their dignity to make personal attacks on others.
With all the leaks, and Press support, there has been no information mentioned so far that implicates anyone in the Trump campaign of any wrongdoing. Trump has adopted tactics like those used by Democrats. They have to be careful to assure that their rookie defense is competent.

  13. This was a lovely chess gambit. Dems got hacked and Wasserman Schutz had to resign. Dems complained it was the Russians who hacked, and then that Russians were the reason HRC lost via campaign meddling. They were the ones demanding congressional investigation of Trump campaign Russian connections.
With one move on a Saturday morning, Trump gets both House and Senate investigations expanded to include Dem investigation of Trump/Russia before election. You just know they were doing stuff. The bogus Brit intelligence report is proof. All the intelligence leaks strongly imply US intelligence was doing stuff also. The FISA warrant sources tend to confirm it. US citizens acting as ‘agents’ of Russia is colorable enough given Manafort past work alone.
In the end, the Russian-Trump thing won’t matter. Dems made it up. But the Obama administrations investigation into it and now the cover up of that probable official investigation will be very damaging. More ‘true’ Obama legacy. Like IRS and Lois Lerner.

  15. Willis, while I tend to agree with you and your interpretations of the Tweeter-In-Chief I do hope he has the mental fortitude to withstand that which the Progressives have planned for him over the next many months. Several days ago Bob Beckel said, on “The Five”, that he did not think President Trump would be in office by the end of his first term. I imagine he was referring to the numerous landmines and (apparently scheduled) propaganda campaigns that the Obama crowd, with the help of or even under the direction of ‘Boy Wonder’, Ben Rhodes, has left for him with the intent of driving him out of office. Many have accused President Trump of being exceedingly thin-skinned. Combine that with a businessman’s desire/need for measurable progress and I would bet they think they can overload him with personal attacks and bureaucratic immobility, expecting the shear frustrations of the office to drive him into abdicating his Presidency. I’m impressed with how he has handled the job so far and do hope he stays in it for the long haul.

  16. CNN tried a little ‘magical misdirection’ of their own with the ‘spy cam’ video of Bannon seen in the window frame of the Oval Office. According to their inside ‘source’ there was a yuge row! With expletives and even finger pointing. And then Bannon and Priebus were reported to have been sent to sit on the naughty step and weren’t allowed to travel with Trump on Airforce One. All very kindergartenish (British term for acting like a very small child) if it wasn’t really a laughing matter.

As usual only sites like ZH ask the obvious question. How and why does CNN have a ‘spy cam’ focussed on the Oval Office? When you drill down into this piece of fake news, it’s clear the ‘source’ was not in the room, didn’t know what was being discussed and didn’t know there was an argument or even angry expletives from Trump.

You really do despair that the media will ever get over themselves and actually start reporting news rather than fairy tales and ‘what we think was going on’ opinion pieces.

The democrats have been so outmaneuvered that they are destroying their own support, and without them even realizing it or Trump having to expend much effort to set it in motion. XD

On the other hand, it is a little worrisome that persuasion can be so powerful. A few (carefully tailored) notes typed on a phone and a whole country shakes, some in laughter, others in rage, and a few in panic at the muck that will soon be uncovered.

So somebody in the intel community was also breaking federal law by leaking this stuff to the Clinton campaign.
